I’ve been reflecting on how our environment and upbringing shape us.
One example for me was my dad’s career. My dad, who never attended college, worked at the same company for over 40 years. He worked hard and climbed the corporate ranks successfully, against hard odds too.
It taught me grit, determination, and also loyalty… maybe to a fault.
When I landed my first job after school, I thought I’d follow his path. I expected to work hard, put in my time, and climb the ranks. But after two years, I was miserable. The job was tough, and it began to affect my personal life. I didn’t know what else to do and my expectations were I just needed to take my “beatings” to eventually earn a better role and position. I didn’t want to give up on the loyalty or grit I had seen displayed by my dad. I stayed for another 2.5 years before I finally started looking for something else, out of exasperation.
At the time, I felt embarrassed. Why didn’t I have what it takes to make it?
It was scary choosing to leave, especially leaving the path I had seen my dad take. Would I be able to figure it out on my own?
Reflecting back, I’m so glad I had the courage to leave.
I took a chance on a fast growing company named Uber and it’s one of the best career decisions I ever made. It was a total transformation for me in the best way.
